Water Heater Maintenance Tips: Use these 6 easy and inexpensive ways to increase your water heater's efficiency and longevity.

Your water heater is an important appliance that provides hot water for your daily needs, from showers to washing dishes. However, like any appliance, it needs proper maintenance to ensure it runs efficiently and lasts for as long as possible. By following these 6 easy and inexpensive water heater maintenance tips, you can increase your water heater's efficiency and longevity.

Check the temperature and pressure relief valve

The temperature and pressure relief (TPR) valve is an important safety feature on your water heater that helps prevent excess pressure from building up and causing damage or even an explosion. You should check the TPR valve at least once a year to make sure it's working properly. To test it, lift the lever on the valve and let it snap back. If it doesn't snap back, or if water continues to flow after the lever is released, you may need to replace the valve.

Drain the tank

Over time, sediment can build up in the bottom of your water heater tank, which can cause the tank to corrode and reduce its efficiency. To prevent this, you should drain the tank at least once a year to remove any sediment that has accumulated. To do this, turn off the power or gas supply to the water heater, connect a hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank, and open the valve to allow the water to drain out. Once the tank is empty, close the valve and refill the tank.

Insulate the tank ï»¿

Insulating your water heater tank can help reduce heat loss and improve its efficiency. You can purchase an insulation blanket for your water heater tank at most hardware stores, or you can make your own by wrapping the tank with fiberglass insulation and securing it with duct tape.

Check the anode rod

The anode rod is a sacrificial metal rod that helps prevent corrosion in your water heater tank. Over time, the anode rod will become depleted and need to be replaced. You should check the anode rod at least once a year, and replace it if it is more than 50% depleted.

Check for leaks

Leaks can cause damage to your home and reduce the efficiency of your water heater. You should check for leaks around the tank and connections at least once a year, and repair any leaks as soon as possible.

Schedule annual maintenance

Regular maintenance by a professional can help ensure your water heater runs efficiently and lasts as long as possible. A professional can check for leaks, test the TPR valve, inspect the anode rod, and perform other maintenance tasks as needed.

In conclusion

Following these easy and inexpensive water heater maintenance tips can help increase your water heater's efficiency and longevity, and prevent costly repairs and replacements. By taking care of your water heater, you can ensure you have hot water whenever you need it, and avoid the inconvenience and expense of a malfunctioning appliance.
