Your Sewer FAQ's
Answered By The Best Plumbing Company Toledo, Ohio.
What are sewer services?
Sewer services are considered any service that deals with sewer lines or waste lines in your home. We generally work on residential and commercial systems connected to a city sewer system, so the sewer line exits the home and connects to a larger sewage line, which is maintained by the city or county. We also work on sewage lines that feed into septic tank systems, which are a little more common outside city cores and in the Ohio Valley.
What is best, a hydro jet or a snake, for clearing blockages in a sewer line?
This will really depend on your specific clog. Our professional plumbers are trained in both and use both clog-removal systems regularly. The hydrojet is generally used to clear grease, sludge, roots and debris from a pipe. While the snake is used for larger clogs, blockages or thick tree roots.
What is the difference between a sewer line and a drain line?
Drain lines and sewer lines work in tandem to create your great water and waste system. Drain lines carry wastewater from your sinks, tubs, showers and toilets to the main sewer line in your home. The sewer line then carries wastewater from your property to either your septic tank or the municipal sewer system. Generally, you will have multiple drain lines and a single sewer line that exists outside your home.
Can heavy rains cause sewer backups?
Yes, heavy rains are one of the main causes of sewer backups here in the Ohio Valley. Excessive rain can overwhelm city sewer systems, causing wastewater to back up into homes. To prevent this backup, you can install a backwater prevention device.
How deep are sewer lines normally buried?
Generally, residential sewer lines are buried about 6 feet underground to connect to the city sewer system, which is typically below the main road. However, the specific depth will vary depending on the building codes and property layout.
How long does a sewer line repair take?
We are not able to provide an exact timeline for sewer repairs, as your specific situation will determine the length of the repair. For minor issues such as a small blockage or pipe repair, it can take a couple of hours. If we have to replace a pipe or perform a more complex repair, it can take a few days. For the most complex sewer repairs, it can take several days to a week, especially if we have to trench and obtain city permits.
Does homeowners insurance cover sewer repairs?
For more homeowners, yes, homeowner’s insurance will cover sewer repairs as long as you have sewer or water riders in your policy. However, we should note that some policies will only cover sudden damage or issues outside of your control. If an insurance adjustor notices gradual wear and tear or a longer-term issue that has not been addressed, you may struggle to have your backup covered.
Are sewer gases dangerous for homeowners?
Yes, sewer gases can be a significant issue in both commercial and residential settings. Sewer gases can contain methane and hydrogen sulphide, which, at high concentrations, can be extremely dangerous. If you notice sewer gases in your home or building, call Fry as soon as possible to get to the bottom of the issue and fix it.
Do you clean main lines and sewer lines?
Yes, we can clean main lines and sewer lines for our residential and commercial clients. We use a few different methods to clean piping systems, and start any process with a camera inspection to check where the issue spots are in the system. Once we pinpoint the issues, we will use either a hydro-jet, which uses high-pressure water to clean the pipe, or a snake, which is a long line with a metal head that spins and removes clogs.
Are you a licensed plumber who can deal with sewer lines?
Yes, we are a licensed commercial and residential plumber, able to work in both Ohio and Michigan. Our plumbers are based out of Toledo, Ohio and Ann Arbor, Michigan and can service the surrounding areas for all of your sewer line services, including sewer line repair, sewer line installation and sewer line replacement services.
Do you offer warranties?
We are happy to provide both manufacturer warranties, where possible, and workmanship warranties on all of our plumbing services. We take pride in our work and will ensure that we properly install your pipes, drains and sewer lines. If you have any issues, our team will make things right.
Do you offer camera locating services?
Yes, we are happy to provide camera inspection services to check pipes and the sewer lines around your home. Our cameras can pinpoint issues, detect potential problems, and give you some peace of mind about the current state of your plumbing system.
What are the signs of a sewer line issue?
The key warning signs that you are dealing with a sewer line issue include multiple drain backups, persistent slow drains, wet spots in your yard, water pooling, gurgling toilets or drains, pest infestation or foul odors around your drain. If you do notice these issues, you need to call in the guys at Fry to do an inspection and find the issue once and for all. However, there are a few other things to keep an eye out for, including foundation cracks or settling caused by soil erosion under your home, or mold or mildew around pipes.
What should I avoid putting down my drain?
There are a few things that you should avoid putting down your drain to help prevent clogs and issues. In your kitchen, you should avoid flushing any of the following down your kitchen sink: fats, oils, and grease (FOG), coffee grounds, starchy foods, eggshells, dairy products, produce stickers, and flour. In your bathroom, you should never flush hygiene products such as tampons or condoms, hair, flushable wipes, dental floss or cat litter.
How often should I clean my sewer line?
It is recommended that you have your main sewer line professionally cleaned every 18-24 months. These cleanings will allow our plumbers to determine whether there are any issues with tree roots or blockages and will give you a better idea of smaller problems that could cause significant issues down the line.
How often should I inspect my sewage lines?
For the vast majority of residential clients, you do not need to have a yearly sewer inspection. For these clients, we suggest a bi-annual sewer camera inspection to catch small issues early and ensure that tree roots have not intruded and that older pipes are still functioning. If you are buying a home, we always recommend a camera inspection to ensure you know what you are getting into with your sewer and piping system. For commercial clients, we can provide annual inspections to meet insurance requirements and address any issues that may be percolating.
What is a trenchless sewer repair?
Trenchless sewer repairs are one of the best inventions of our time. We use a camera inspection to determine the specific location of the problem. We will then run our cured-in-place pipe lining tools into the pipe. This tool is a fabric tool coated with resin and cured using heat or UV light. Once cured, the pipe is like new and will form a permanent bond with the old pipe.
What can cause sewage backup?
There are a few things that can cause a sewage backup that will cause issues within your home. The most common cause of a sewer line clog is tree roots. Trees, especially willows, river birch, sycamore and silver maples, love finding moisture sources like water or sewer lines. Other causes can include soil movement, which can shift or bend pipes, or improper items flushed down the pipes, such as flushable wipes, which have become one of the most common clogs we find in Toledo, OH.
When should you call a professional plumber for sewer services?
If you are dealing with sewage odors, water backups, or recurring clogs, it is time to call a professional plumber to inspect your plumbing system. Our plumbers can check for clogs or blockages and inspect your pipes for any cracked, broken, or loose connections that could be causing your issues.
How long does a sewer line usually last?
There are many factors that come into play when considering how long a residential sewer line will last. Generally, sewer lines last between 40 and 60 years, but factors such as material and soil conditions will determine how long they last. For instance, a PVC line will typically last over 50 years, while an older clay line may last only a couple of decades.
What is the difference between sewer line repairs and sewer replacement?
When we talk about sewer line repairs, we mean fixing a specific section of the pipe. This could include clearing a blockage, addressing tree root intrusion at a specific spot, or patching a damaged area. When we talk about sewer replacement, it is going to be a multi-piece service, with multiple pipes replaced. This can happen when your piping has widespread damage, is sagging or continues to have repeated failures. Our plumbers will discuss our repair plan and provide you with the best possible repair or replacement, depending on your specific needs.
Can you install commercial backflow devices?
Yes, we are accredited by the states of Ohio and Michigan to install and test commercial backflow devices, which are required in commercial properties. If you have questions around the requirements or want to schedule a test of your current device, please feel free to reach out, and our seasoned professional plumbers can work with you and your building management to ensure that your property is up to standard.
Can sewer lines freeze in winter?
Sewer lines can freeze in winter, but if the sewer line is done to code, you should not have an issue with the pipe freezing. Here in Ohio and Michigan, as long as the pipes are below the permafrost line, they will not freeze.
Do you need to trench to complete sewer line repairs?
This will depend on the exact issue we are dealing with in your sewer line. For the vast majority of sewer line repairs we need to make in Toledo, Ohio, we can complete them trenchless using our cure-in-place system. However, some specific issues require trench repair, such as bellied pipes, and our team can complete them as well.
Why do my drains gurgle when I shower or flush?
Gurgling lines generally mean that you have air trapped in your pipes or sewer line caused by a clog. The gurgling sound occurs when water rushes past the clog, forcing air upward. Generally, these clogs will be in your mainline, but a professional plumber can find and remove them once and for all.
What should you do if you smell sewer in your home?
If you notice a sewer smell coming from your floor drains or elsewhere in your basement or lower level, call the experts at Fry. A sewer smell can indicate an issue somewhere along your sewer line, such as a blockage or a cracked pipe, or it could be an issue with your venting system. No matter the issue, our professional plumbers will locate the source and ensure your sewer line is in tip-top shape.
Can a sewer backup damage my home?
Yes, a sewer backup is considered a plumbing emergency, and if it is happening in your home in Toledo, OH, you need to call Fry. Wastewater can back up through multiple avenues, including tubs, showers and floor drain and can cause significant damage to your home. Often, sewer backups can damage floors, drywall, and furniture, and, as it is greywater or raw sewage, it must be treated as a biohazard. This means our team will need to wear PPE, and you may need to remove additional debris from your lower levels to ensure mould and other toxins do not get the chance to grow and cause other related issues.
