The 7 Best DIY Tips to Maintain your HVAC System

Even with regular professional servicing, there are several ways you can ensure your HVAC system operates smoothly between appointments. You don't have to be an HVAC expert to learn the basics of system maintenance that will keep your equipment in top shape. To help you take the reins of managing your home's heating and cooling, here are seven easy ways to keep your HVAC working like a charm all year round.

Change Your Air Filters Regularly

The culprit of an inefficient HVAC system is often a dirty air filter. Clogged filters restrict airflow, forcing your system to work harder and shortening its lifespan. It is recommend changing your filter approximately every 3 months to keep things running smoothly. If you have pets or someone in your home with allergies, you may need to replace your filter more frequently to keep air flowing freely.

Clear Any Obstructions Near Your Outdoor Unit

Make sure your outdoor unit has about 2 feet of clearance around all sides. This will prevent anything from blocking the airflow or causing the unit to overheat. Pay special attention to any nearby bushes or hanging branches, as you don't want leaves or debris falling into the equipment.

Clean Your Vent Openings & Registers

Dust and debris in your vent openings can limit the airflow through your home. To help remove these potential issues, remove the register and give it a quick wash with soap and water before placing it back on the vent opening. You can also vacuum the exposed duct opening to remove debris that may impede airflow. This task can be done every 6-12 months, depending on whether you have pets or have a busy home.

Check Your AC Drain Pan & Drain Line

Some systems will have an indoor unit that will have an AC drain pan under the evaporator coils that is designed to catch condensation. If everything is working as it should, your drain pan and lines will move water out of the system. To prevent water damage and potential mold growth, regularly check to ensure your unit is not leaking. Be sure to turn off the power to your unit before opening the access panel to inspect the drain pan and lines. Look for any noticeable cracks, check for water stains, and check for any musty odors that might indicate a problem.

Clean Your Condenser Coils

When your outdoor unit's condenser coils get dirty, your system works less efficiently. Not only can this increase your energy bills, but it can also shorten the lifespan of your equipment. Start by ensuring your unit is powered off. Then, open the top and remove any large debris, such as leaves, sticks, or dirt, using a soft brush. Next, use a hose with a gentle spray to rinse the coils. Avoid using a pressure washer or high-jet setting on a hose, as this can damage the fins inside the unit. A coil cleaning solution specifically designed for AC units can be helpful in removing stubborn dirt and grime. Leave the unit powered off until it is completely dry, then reassemble and turn your system back on.

Test Your AC & Thermostat

Once you have finished your DIY maintenance, don't forget to test out your handiwork. Turn on your system and let it run for about 30 minutes. Listen for any unusual noises and check for any odors. You can also test your thermostat by simply adjusting the temperature higher or lower to see if your heating or AC is running properly. You may also want to consider purchasing a smart thermostat which can help lower utility costs and keep your home the perfect temperature with its ability to adjust the temperature when needed.

Know When to Leave It to the professionals

Regular at-home maintenance helps your HVAC system stay efficient and durable, but annual checkups with a certified professional can help detect issues early and prevent future headaches.
