What is the big deal about whole home dehumidifiers?

As we enter into Fall, the leaves are starting to change, and we often think back about those amazing long summer nights in Toledo, Ohio. However, as anyone from the Ohio Valley can tell you, the worst thing about Midwest living is the humidity in the summer. It is thick and unforgiving, and whether you love the heat or are retreating from the summer sun and are in front of the air conditioning unit, humidity is everywhere. However, there is some relief, at least in your home or business, and that is through a whole home dehumidifier. In this blog, we are going to touch on what a whole home dehumidifier is, how it works, what it can do and why they are an excellent investment for your property in Michigan and Ohio.

What is a whole home dehumidifier?

A whole home dehumidifier is an accessory that you can add to your existing HVAC system that allows for centralized humidity control within your home. This piece of equipment is integrated into your air handler and is connected to a drain line that will remove moisture from your HVAC system. The entire system is controlled by a humidistat and will run until the desired humidity level is reached within the system.

How does a whole home dehumidifier work?

A whole home dehumidifier works through a four step process. First, moist air is drawn into the unit through a filter in the air handler. Second, the moist air passes over cold evaporator coils, which condense the water vapour into liquid water. Third, this liquid is then sent to a drain line that empties into a floor drain or plumbing pipe and is removed from the system. Finally, the now dryer air is returned to the HVAC system.

What are the benefits of a whole home dehumidifier?

There are a few key benefits of a whole home dehumidifier system for your home in the Ohio Valley, especially if you live in an older home along the lake or in an area that is prone to high humidity. These include:

  • A healthier indoor environment - Dehumidifier systems, like the ones we install, provide dehumidification and air filtration as the air recirculates through your HVAC system. By reducing the humidity of the air, our systems will help control and prevent the growth of mold and mildew within the home and ducts. As well, the air filter will help eliminate dust mites, allergens and dirt from cycling through your ducts and air handler.
  • A comfier environment - Imagine not having to be stuck to the leather furniture or defrizzing your curly hair? Well, that is all possible with a dehumidifier that can create a more comfortable living space within your home by removing excess humidity that creates a sticky and dewy environment.
  • A better protected home- Humidity is not a positive for those with top end finishes or exposed metal pieces within the home. Installing a dehumidifier can help reduce corrosion, prevent wood flooring and cabinets from warping and protect furnishings throughout the space.
  • A better smelling home- Humidity is known to bring in unwanted smells that come with a damp environment, such as mildew and must. A dehumidifier will help eliminate these smells, creating a fresher environment for you, your kids and your pets.
  • A better system designed for your whole home- Although portable dehumidifiers can help in a pinch, they are limited to the room that they are located in. We have worked with numerous clients to provide them with a comprehensive approach that eliminates the need for multiple dehumidifiers and removes moist air at its source. This means that every room in your home receives clean and fresh air with the ideal humidity, regardless of its location within the home.
